Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. The Somalis, which gave name to the country form the major population and are also based in the neighboring countries. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest.
Drought, hunger, violence – the people of Somalia have been suffering for years. Since the 1990s, warlords, clans and militias have been fighting for supremacy in the East African country, leading to a civil war in 1991. At present, the situation in large parts of south-central Somalia is still highly unstable and insecure.
